Tarih Teksas ilk defa 1528'de İspanyol gemici Cabeza Da Vaca ile gelenler ayak basmıştır.O günden sonra sırasıyla Fransa , İspanya , Meksika'nın eline geçti.1836'da bağımsız bir cumhuriyet oldu.1845'te Amerika Birleşik Devletleri'ne katıldı.O sıralarda Teksas'ta birkaç küçük şehir ve hayvan beslenen büyük çiftliklerden başka birşey yoktu.Gerek hayvancılık, gerek tarım, gerekse petrol'ün bulunması XX.yüzyıl içinde teksas'ın gelişmesinde en önemli etkenlerdi.
